“For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus’ sake.” 2 Corinthians 4:5
God has given me the great privilege to be the pastor of Grace Independent Baptist Church from its founding as an independent church on November 2, 2014. This is not where our story together began, however. Discerning a call from God to establish a fundamental Baptist church in the Liberty community, my wife Sarah and I were sent out under the authority of Faith Temple Baptist Church in the community of Millboro to establish a mission work. The very day that Faith Temple Baptist Church voted to give its blessing to this work, Sister Bertha Layton, who was visiting in that service, stood to testify that she had prayed that God would send a Baptist preacher to begin a fundamental church in the Liberty community. God had already been preparing the way for us.
Grace Independent Baptist Mission began as a mission work on April 3, 2011 with its first service held that Sunday morning in the Parker Building in downtown Liberty, NC. It was there that God allowed us to hold services for three and a half years until Grace Independent Baptist Church was founded. Our first members included those we had led to Christ and baptized as well as others led by the hand of God to us. Just after organizing as a church, God blessed us with the opportunity to purchase the property formerly occupied by the Liberty Grove Methodist Church before its closing.
As to my personal testimony, I can truly say along with the Apostle Paul that I am what I am by the grace of God. I thank God for His saving grace. I first trusted Christ to save me on June 14, 2003 at the age of eighteen. God used the witness of my then future wife and a Gospel tract she gave me written by Mrs. Oliver B. Greene, “What Does it Mean to Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ?,” to bring me to a saving knowledge of the Lord. I had been a devout Catholic, but God opened my heart to the truth that salvation is His work and that it is received only by grace through faith. In spite of who I am and all of my sin, Jesus Christ has saved me and has clothed me in His perfect righteousness. Thank God!
After my conversion, I immediately began attending church at New Center Church in Seagrove, NC. I followed the Lord in believer’s baptism at New Center. Surrounded by the love of God’s people and sound biblical preaching, God gave me an increasing desire to serve Him and to be used by Him. Along with that desire came a burden upon my heart to preach the Gospel. On Sunday, March 19, 2006 I surrendered to God’s call to preach at New Center. Pastor Jimmy Shirlen was a great blessing and help to me, giving me many opportunities to preach and to grow. It was on June 10 of the same year that God allowed me to marry Sarah, my love and my helpmeet. She has been and continues to be the greatest blessing God has given me second only to His Son. Sarah loves the Lord and has a heart to serve Him and His people.
I began studying at Faith Temple Baptist College in the fall of 2006 and continued on in my studies to receive my doctorate of theology in May of 2012. While in Bible College, God opened many doors of opportunity to preach at churches between pastors and also in the rest home ministry. In January of 2009, I was given the opportunity to serve as youth pastor at Faith Temple Baptist Church under Pastor Buddy Smith. Dr. Smith has been and continues to be a great source of help and inspiration in the ministry. He took much time and effort to teach me and to guide me in the work of the ministry. God allowed me to learn much while there at Faith Temple Baptist Church until April of 2011. It was from there that God called us to the work in Liberty.
God has blessed us with two children, Nathanael and Lydia, who are the joy of our home. Nathanael and Lydia both love being involved in the ministry activities of the church and love being together with the other children at church. God has been very good to us.
I am honored to serve in the ministry at Grace Independent Baptist Church in Liberty. I look forward to working together with the people of Grace Independent Baptist Church to see many more precious souls come to the Lord, new believers baptized and taught the truths of the Word of God, and an even stronger relationship with God and with each other developed so that we might be greatly used by Him as a church. We would love to help you or answer any questions that you might have about the Word of God or the ministry of this church. If you are seeking a Bible believing church home where you can grow and serve along with us, we invite you to visit us. To God alone be the glory for what He has done and what He will do!
“Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.” Ephesians 3:21
