“Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong.” 1 Corinthians 16:13
Some things in this life happen without any effort or resolve on the part of individuals. Dust accumulates on anything left outdoors over any length of time, moss covers shaded hillsides, and algae grows on the surface of an undisturbed pond. This sort of growth or accumulation is natural. A strong home, a strong church, and godly character and spiritual strength in men, however, will not be discovered by any of us if we choose to return to them after a season of neglect and indecision. These things do not come naturally. Salvation is a work of God’s grace in our hearts as sinners that none of us could ever merit, attain, or even maintain by our own efforts. It is wholly the work of our crucified, risen, and exalted Saviour, Jesus Christ. However, we are commanded to “grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18). We must be resolute in our purpose to progress for the Lord who has saved us.
God gives us brief but broad instructions in 1 Corinthians 16:13. We aren’t told to coast, to let be what will be, or to stand back and let someone else do the work of the ministry or to save our homes from Satan’s destructive influence. God commands us to stand up and be on guard! We ourselves must be vigilant, stedfast, faithful, and firm to lead our homes for Christ and to be men of integrity that the Lord will use as a pillar of strength and service in the work of Christ. It is time for you and for me to wake up, to man up, and to be deliberate in our decisions to follow Christ and for others to fall in behind us. Will you purpose together with me today to be a valiant man? God does not tell us to seek Him after our families or personal testimonies are halfway (or further) to the point of no return. He tells us to be strong now and start taking preventative medicine instead of painkillers to numb ourselves to the agony of what we have let the world, the flesh, and the devil steal from us.
Do not throw away today’s golden opportunity to serve God and be a valiant man for His glory. Do not let your place as the leader in your home and a leader in your church be usurped by anyone else. Step up to the plate now and be led by the Lord rather than being dragged around by the devil.
